The European Union said Tuesday it has given eight million dollars to Zimbabwe to help fund a programme to draft a new constitution meant to pave the way for fresh elections.

Zimbabwe celebrates 30 years of independence this weekend but there is little hope for the future in a country only slowly recovering from economic collapse after three decades of President Robert Mugabe’s rule.

ZANU-PF sources said President Mugabe is bitter that the U.S. administration of President Barack Obama has kept him at arm’s length while re-engaging with Prime Minister Tsvangirai, and maintained sanctions against him.

Robert Mugabe has reportedly said he will not appoint provincial governors from the MDC, as they may not be loyal to him. He has also dug in his heels and said that Attorney-General Johannes Tomana and central bank boss Gideon Gono are going nowhere.
